History

The court house was built in 1840 and the jail in 1842. In 1862, various municipal realignments resulted in the distinguished stone building becoming the headquarters for the County of Peterborough solely. During the mid-1900's, a registry office was added to the south end of the building, and in succeeding years, the present jail was built at the rear of the Court House.

The first floor is where the hardened criminals were locked up, and they had to make do with long narrow cells. Up on the second floor are larger cells where the juvenile offenders were often held. The jail closed in 1998 after a riot damaged the interior of the building.

There were 5 hangings at the Peterborough County Jail between 1873 and 1933.
• December 26th 1873, James Fox (alias William Brenton)
• June 23rd 1910, Robert Henderson (age 17)
• January 14th 1920, Michael Bahri and Thomas Konek
• November 29th 1933, Edward Franklin Jackson

Archaeological excavations in the jail led to the recovery of the skeletons of four of the five murderers hanged there. They had been buried next to the gallows. All four have been genetically identified and have had proper burials.
The fith body, that of Robert Henderson was buried at a local cemetery after the hanging by the request of his family.

* There is a controversy concerning orbs in regards to their authenticity. Although many are believed to be authentic, there are still many showing up as a result of airborne particles (dust) at the time of the flash. This happens in both indoor & outdoor shots. Because of this, it makes it hard to disassociate the false positive orbs from the real ones. We at proo(f) leave the interpretation of the anomalies to you.
